WHAT IS LIFE COACHING?

In the present day scenario, we often hear the word “life coaching”. But actually, what is life coaching? Well, it is akin to defining life and is a rather recent area of learning and development. As life coaching is an entirely different subject and being the newest professions, people define it in their own way. Believed to have originated during the late 1970s and early 1980s from the teachings of Benjamin Karter, a football coach turned motivational speaker, it is Thomas J. Leonard who is credited with giving Life Coaching its present shape and form. Although Leonard was a financial planner but all his clients sought his advice regarding on personal and professional matters. As a result, he entered into the process of personal coaching, which in turn called as the Life Coaching. Leonard also, later on, found the International Coach Federation, a global network of credentialed coaches.

Life coaching is a profession that is steadily gaining importance in the world. It is effective in many situations such as in a person’s career direction and development and also for personal fulfillment. A life coach is a professional who is a source of inspiration and motivation and eventually helps you to reach a goal or mark a change in your life. The profession has also diversified into a very large number of specialties, the most common ones being Personal Development Coaching, Business Coaching, Career Coaching, Executive Coaching, Health and Wellness Coaching, Relationship Coaching, and Spiritual Coaching.

Life coaching is an upcoming subject that is gaining popularity and importance in today’s world. It is a specially designed alliance between the coach and the client where the coaching relationship continues with the client. Through the process of life coaching individuals gets to know their inner self and explore you in you. It is essentially about self-development and as such shares, many commonalities with fields like psychotherapy/counseling, consulting, and mentoring, among others.

Life Coaching is a profession that is strongly different from consulting, mentoring, advice, therapy, or counseling. Rather the coaching process addresses specific personal projects, business achievements, questioning, listening, clarifying, reframing, and providing feedback, general conditions, and changeover in the client’s personal life, relationships or career life by examining the present situation. The most trusted two-way relationship between a client and the life coach is the key to solutions. Discovering the obstacles, challenges and problems, a person needs to be faced with the practical phases of life and also choose a course of action to make your life be what you want it to be. The coaching can be conducted on a one-to-one basis or in a group with multiple clients.

Although many people feel that Life Coaching is similar to counseling and all the other fields but in reality it is not. The most crucial difference between Life Coaching and the rest of these fields is that unlike the other practitioners, a life coach does not position him/herself as superior to the client, but as a partner and a confidant. This is also a major factor that makes Life Coaching so popular and so effective in the present day scenario.
